What you need to be doing now to stay employable in the future

As technology rapidly evolves and job functions change, how do you make sure you remain employable in one, three or five years’ time?

When you have been in a role for a while, it can be easy to become complacent and focus only your current job. However, if you suddenly find yourself faced with redundancy, or your realise it’s time to make your next career move, it can be challenging to find a new role if you haven’t maintained a strong personal brand and network, or kept your skills up to date.

Here’s what you need to do now to ensure you’re at the top of the candidate list for the best job opportunities in the future – if and when you need to make your next career move.

  1. Become a trend spotter
     

    It’s important to monitor the trends and fluctuations in your sector or job function. You don’t have to be an expert, but you do need to be proactive.

    From salariesto industry trends, technologies and skills in demand, you should be aware of growth areas in your field and look out for the next innovation or companies that look primed for success in your specialisation.

    Attend conferences, watch webinars, subscribe to podcasts, or follow your industry influencers on social media. Talk to people within your networks about the hot topics, and meet with specialised recruiters who can keep you informed – even if you’re happy in your role at the moment.

    By staying attuned to the trends, you’ll be able to find out the experiences, capabilities and skills that employers are looking for. This will also help you know when to make the leap and go for a new role.

  2. Embrace a growth mindset
     

    Whether it’s on the sports field or in the office, some people seem to be more resilient when faced with challenges. Those with a “growth mindset” see challenges as learning opportunities. Meanwhile, people with a “fixed mindset” feel threatened by change and thus are reluctant to learn and grow. The key to being “growth minded” is simple.

    According to the Harvard Business Review, growth-minded individuals achieve more than those with a fixed mindset, because they worry less about looking smart and focus on learning instead.

    No matter where you are in your career, you can develop a growth mindset by asking yourself often: “What can I do in my capacity to grow professionally?” It’s about taking responsibility for your own career progression, rather than relying on others to look after that for you.

  3. Improve your soft skills
     

    The experience of Hudson consultants is that employers are increasingly looking for soft skills, not just technical skills, when hiring. In fact, in our latest research, employers surveyed said that finding candidates with the relevant soft skills was in their top three hiring challenges.

    Having the right soft skills could be your advantage over others who have the same technical expertise as you do.

    The most in-demand soft skills are the ability to influence, negotiate and manage stakeholder relations, as well as communicate effectively and adapt to change.

    Look for opportunities in your current role to improve your soft skills. This could be in the form of taking ownership of tasks or projects that require stakeholder management.

    It could also mean taking a course on negotiating so that you can exert more influence or communicate better to drive results.

  4. Cultivate your personal brand
     

    You are your own brand ambassador, and that means being conscious of how you are perceived in person and online.

    Your brand consists not just of your experience and skills, but of your values, reputation and motivations. What drives you and what you are passionate about can be a good guide for organisations to gauge your cultural fit (and vice versa).

    Some more experienced professionals don’t realise the importance of being visible online, because they didn’t need to be when they started out in their roles.

    However a professional’s digital profile can be a differentiator when it comes to choosing candidates for highly-contested roles.

    The world is becoming more connected and social networking platforms like LinkedIn are a great way to connect with industry insiders. Not only can LinkedIn send you personalised notifications about new roles, it’s a great way to keep up-to-date with the latest news in your sector.

    You can also cultivate your brand by attending in-person events and conferences, so that you can become known amongst your peers and potential employers.

    You can combine online and offline networking for maximum effect. For example, after attending an in-person networking event be sure to follow up with a LinkedIn message to those you’ve met.

    Cultivating your personal brand makes it more likely that the next great job opportunity will find you, as employers seek you out for their team.

  5. Embrace a portfolio career
     

    Employers tend to be looking for employees with specific experience; therefore it’s common for professionals to shift jobs frequently to ensure they can position themselves with experience in the right industries or organisations for where they want their career to go.

    Embracing a portfolio career means that rather than working just one job, professionals are open to a wide range of opportunities whether they be project, contract or part-time work. It involves looking at your career in a more fluid way.

    It’s also becoming more common to freelance, even when you have a fulltime job.

    Barrie Hopson, co-author of "10 Steps to Creating a Portfolio Career,” believes that many professionals choose a portfolio career because it provides “a more fulfilling work-life blend, not to mention a safety net of several jobs”.

  6. Be clear about your career goals
     

    Even if you’re happy in your current role, it helps to be clear on your own long-term career goals so you can make the right decisions now to set you up for the future.

    Do you want a job that brings more upward progression, more freedom, a bigger team to manage or a sense of purpose?

    If you’re not sure, you might want to seek the advice of a career coach or mentor to be clear about your career goals.

While you can’t control external factors like the economy, hiring demands and technology changes, by actively managing your career, you’ll put yourself in good stead for future job opportunities.
